TEA VARIETIES & HEALTH BENEFITS
Tea is an aromatic beverage commonly prepared by pouring hot or boiling water over cured leaves of the Camellia sinensis.
The Camellia Sinensis plant is native to Asia, but is currently cultivated around the world in tropical and subtropical areas.
Tea is the most consumed beverage in the world after water. It has been a part of our culture for thousands of years.
While all tea comes from the same plant, there exist hundreds of kinds of teas, with their own individual appearance, taste, and aroma. Every harvest of tea will vary year to year due to changes in climate, rainfall, and other seasonal conditions.
Basic Varieties of tea are:
GREEN TEA:
Because they are unoxidized, green teas keep their vital color.
The lack of oxidation is also responsible for the very low caffeine content of green tea.
After picking, the leaves are heated soon in order to eliminate the enzymes that causes oxidation.
This type of processing preserves a high level of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals accounting for the various health benefits of green tea.
Here are some of its benefits:
WHITE TEA
It is the least processed of all teas. It is the most delicate of all teas.
Young leaves or growth buds undergo minimum oxidation in the production of white tea.
White teas are picked when young tea buds are tightly enclosed in new leaves. This retains a silky, downy quality in the leaves.
White tea produces a very light coloured infusion with mild flavour.
Its caffeine content is even lower than that of green tea and is considered to have a very high level of antioxidants.
Health Benefits:
OOLONG TEA
It is also known as wulong tea. The term in Chinese actually means "Black Dragon".
Oolong teas are semi oxidized. The caffeine content and antioxidant level is also mid–way between that of green and black teas, making them most healthy and palatable.
Health benefits are:
BLACK TEA
Black tea is fully oxidised and has darker appearance, stronger flavour and higher caffeine content compared to other teas.
Often black teas can be consumed with sugar, milk or lemon.
Health benefits:
PU-ERH TEA
Pu erh tea is an aged & fermented black tea that comes from the Yunnan province in China and has an earthy flavor.
